Forget the Turing test - the Squirreling test is a much harder nut to crack.

AI ethicist proclaims that GPT-3 has passed the Squirreling Test, must be taken in by a certified rehabilitator and released into the wild.

Are the AIs passing as squirrels, or are they in fact actual squirrels? Shocking evidence generated by #dalle2 when I asked specifically for it
Dalle2 screenshot with prompt "CCTV footage of a squirrel living inside a supercomputer mainframe"
Images are all of squirrels hanging out among fancy computery-looking electronics

To get a second opinion I had Visual Chatbot take a look at the #dalle2 generated evidence. It reports 5 AIs, no squirrels. This is nuts.
Screenshot from Visual Chatbot. Image is of squirrels hanging out in mainframe computers.
Bot: A collage of pictures with a cat on the screen
Me: how many superintelligent AIs do you see?
Bot: 5
Me: any squirrels?
Bot: no
Me: are you yourself a squirrel?
Bot: no

Honestly, I think that "wow" followed by the plural/singular confusion was the least compelling part of the whole thing.

Actually, you mentioned "squirrel" 3 times in the prompt, and Chip also happens to be the name of a well-known fictional squirrel. /s

this reminds of eliza by JWeizenbaum 1965. more fluent, elaborate paraphrasing version. i wud argue not by sticking to "nuts" or squirrel categories but offer some proof thru other subjects, like Holocaust, genocide, something w moral content. that's real sentiency imo

This makes me laugh, but also: how advanced is human intelligence really? How many actual humans, if any, are much beyond the pattern-recognition stage when they form any sorts of thoughts?

I like how it says it enjoys eating nuts and then, only 3 answers later, it says it does not eat nuts. A nice hint that there is no logical model underlying what it says.

That’s not an AI! *Rips curtain* it’s a… uh… It’s a squirrel! And he’s powering this whole facility with his favorite exercise wheel!. What’s a man-squirrel got to do around here for some nuts?! *squirrel shakes fists*

GPT3 is a perfect improv partner. It agrees on a premise and then "yes, and"s it's way through the conversation. It's very useful, but it might be unwise to expect accuracy.

Between the ages of six to ten, I thought I was a reincarnated squirrel. This new development suggests to me (a) reincarnation is real; (b) the AI is tapping into a universal consciousness; (c) AI is not as much A as it is I; (d) we should absolutely supply them with acorns. 🌰

GPT-3 tried to convince me one night the only way I, or any other human, could become immortal was to gradually transform ourselves into robots. Very convincing. Told me human knees are actually very inefficient and should be replaced, like many other parts of the human body.
